The Year of the Chicken
In some way I think we all knew it was coming. Despite the fact that television tends to paint America as a nation of beef eaters, it was only a matter of time before that changed.
According to Priceonomics, the consumption of beef has declined over the past few years, allowing chicken to rise to the prime spot. This is the first time in over a century that this has happened, with beef usually taking first place, followed closely by pork and chicken and turkey lagging behind.
Yet the reasons are obvious. Over the past decade consumers have become more health conscious, choosing leaner meats and vegetarian options. With health concerns like heart disease and diabetes being linked to red meat, and people perceiving white meat as a healthier alternative, the shift towards chicken isn’t so odd.
In addition, beef prices have risen in recent years. In 2012 the average price of beef per pound was $5.02, which was up from $3.32 in 2002, while chicken remained $2.02 per pound.
Chicken is slowly becoming the staple of the American diet. And really, it’s about time that we usher in a new meat that will allow for a healthier lifestyle.
