John F. Kennedy Airport Not the Greatest Fan’s of Music
Well, we always knew that U.S. Customs agents weren’t big fans of comedy, being the stern, stone-faced doormen of the country in which they preside. But who knew they also weren’t lovers of music?
According to Boujemaa Razgui, a renowned Canadian musician who currently resides in the States, officials at John F. Kennedy airport seized 13 of his instruments. The reasoning behind the seizure of handcrafted flutes was that they were “agricultural products.” Even worse was the fact that, due to their status, these flutes had to be destroyed.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection website does state that it is against people bringing undried or untreated bamboo into the country. However, according to Razgui the instruments had been dried.
Among the flutes were 11 Neys and 2 Kawalas. Razgui states there are fewer than 20 of them currently in circulation, making the instruments all the more valuable.
