47. The Art Gallery of Ontario
Toronto’s cultural revolution has been in full swing in the last decade. From Nuit Blanche to TIFF, our city has vibrantly evolved into a worldwide destination for artistic understanding and awareness.
With renewed vigour, it’s the recent work being done at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) that’s offered the latest contribution to Toronto’s cultural landscape. They have fluidly re-branded themselves as an institution adept at alluring different sectors of the community to appreciate the arts.
The acclaimed Jean-Michel Basquiat: Now’s the Time presentation perhaps best showcased this swift transformation. Hosting the first major retrospective of the artist’s work in Canada, the AGO became the aesthetic intersection of where traditional gallery crowds meet fashion circles, hip-hop audiences, new media advocates and the like.
Gone indeed are the days of the stuffy, strait-laced museum experience. The AGO has proudly set itself apart as an axis for different people from different backgrounds coming in through their doors. The cultural arena of Toronto is one that’s been long built on limitless potential. Thanks to a clear vision and unwavering execution, the AGO is proudly doing its part in helping to deliver on that promise.
