42. Shad
In the months following Jian Ghomeshi’s infamous firing from CBC, many wondered who would replace the musician-journalist on Canada’s most well-known radio show,Q (recently re-branded as lower-case q).
In April of this year, after an apparently “exhaustive search,” the answer to that questioncame in the form of Kenyan-born, London, Ontario-raised Shadrach Kabango—or as he’s better known, Shad.
Known to some as “that guy who beat Drake at the Juno’s,” Shad’s actually had quite a career so far. He first started making waves in Canada’s music scene in 2005 with his well-received debut album, When This Is Over, financed with a $17,500 prize he won from 91.5 The Beat’s Rhythm of the Future talent competition. He’s since released three other studio albums and picked up a number of accolades along the way.
The evolution of Shad’s career—from award-winning hip-hop artist to host of CBC Radio’s q—has been fun to watch. Despite his lack of journalistic experience, which led some to argue that he wasn’t ready to take on such a high-profile position at CBC Radio, the 32-year-old emcee has so far wowed listeners with his friendly charisma.
