Jet Lag Pill May Do More Than Just Help Combat Jet Lag
For anyone that’s ever travelled far enough to experience jet lag, you know just how much it can put a damper on the first few days of a vacation. Luckily, scientists in Manchester have isolated a new enzyme that may be helpful in fighting the effects of jet lag.
The enzyme is essentially responsible for the body’s internal clock and through the assistance of a drug that will keep the enzyme suppressed, it’ll make it easier for the body to adapt to the new time schedule.
This is also good news for those who suffer from sleeping disorders since being out of sync for long periods of time can lead to serious mental and physical health issues. According to Dr. David Bechtold, “It is now becoming clear that clock disruption is increasing the incidence and severity of diseases including obesity and diabetes. We are not genetically predisposed to quickly adapt to shift work or long-haul flights, and so our bodies’ clocks are built to resist such rapid changes.”
Both jet lag and night shifts have been discovered to cause some of the greatest risks to the body causing the most damage due to the fact that certain genes aren’t switched on. These genes are responsible for releasing products that keep the immune system functioning properly.
Anything that combats jet lag and allows for a more fulfilling vacation and improved health is good in our books.
