‘Baby Weight’ Linked to Diabetes
A new study published Tuesday in the journal Diabetes Care has made a startling link between diabetes and baby weight. According to Toronto researchers, women who fail to lose the excess weight between months 3 and 12 postpartum are at risk for diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases.
Dr. Ravi Retnakaran explained that “the women who didn’t lose weight had higher blood pressure, higher levels of LDL (bad cholesterol), greater resistance to insulin and lower levels of a particular hormone that is believed to be protective against diabetes and heart disease.”
Of the 305 women that were monitored, it was discovered that those who make small lifestyle decisions in order to shed some of the weight gained during pregnancy are able to stave off most of the adverse affects. Eating healthy, engaging in physical activities such as sports, or partaking in other exercises such as yoga, as well as getting proper sleep, are recommended to decrease the chance of carrying extra baby weight.
Retnakaren also states that, “By that second pregnancy, if you didn’t lose it after the first pregnancy, you’re already at a more adverse risk profile at the outset.”
It cannot be denied that regardless of what is or has happened in one’s life, a healthy lifestyle will almost guarantee a few extra years on this earth - barring any accidents of course.
