Everest Could be Out of the Question
For those looking for an exhilarating adventure and have been entertaining the idea of climbing Everest, finding guides to assist in such an operation could prove difficult.
A couple weeks ago, at least 13 people of Nepal’s ethnic Sherpa community were killed after a block of ice came loose from the mountain, which triggered a cascade down the mountain that ripped through teams of guides. The Sherpa are looking to start a boycott against climbing Everest, which could affect the livelihood of many in the area who depend on the climbers during the season.
Work on the mountain tends to be some of the most sought after careers for the Sherpa. A high-altitude guide can earn upwards of $6,000, during the climbing season, which typically lasts three months.
So although it is dangerous work, it is highly profitable and makes a huge difference to those whose average annual salary is only $700.
