Is the Loonie’s Drop Affecting the Way Books are Priced?

Anyone that has ever purchased a book is probably all too familiar with the price tag on the back or on the inside front cover listing two or three different prices based on the location it is being sold. We have all become complacent with the dual price, which includes a lower American price and a slightly higher Canadian price.

However, if publisher Mariner Books has anything to say about it, that secondary Canadian price will only read “Higher in Canada.”

In a recent picture posted by Reddit user 2brun4u, there is evidence that Canadians may not be given the price of a book until they reach the cash register.

Of course, some people speculate that the price is not listed because of the sharp decline of the loonie, which has fallen in the past half-year by about 10%. Some have already declared that this is as low as we should expect to see the loonie while others are suggesting that we prepare for deeper fall.

So on some level, being vague about the price can be forgiven. However, without a price what is to stop a retailer from charging more than the book costs?

At the moment, we’ll have to deal with various trends that don’t immediately list the ‘Canadian’ price of an item, especially with the uncertainty of the loonie.
