There has been some recent research into the theory that a diet similar to what the cavemen would have had is not only a healthy option, but will also help increase weight loss.

In a Swedish study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a group of seven overweight, post-menopausal women were asked to take part in randomly assigned diets. Half were tasked to eat a high-fibre, low-fat diet that is in accordance with the nutrition guidelines for Nordic countries, while the others ate a more Palaeolithic diet consisting of meat, eggs, fruit, nuts, seeds and vegetables.

The results of the study were quite surprising, with the women on the paleo diet losing 6.5 kg after six months versus those on the Nordic diet who lost only 2.6 kg. In addition to the weight loss, it was also documented that the paleo diet had better results for those who suffer from type 2 diabetes.

At the moment, not a great deal of research has been conducted in the area of the Palaeolithic diet but with results like this more researchers will likely be delving into the eating habits of our ancestors.
