TekSavvy Handing Over the Names of 2,000 Customers Who Illegally Downloaded
The U.S. production company Voltage Pictures recently won a Federal Court decision, which demanded that the Ontario-based Internet service provider, TekSavvy, spill the beans on customers who illegally downloaded movies online.
This means that a large number of the 2,000 customers who have been named may receive a letter in the mail that threatens legal action under the Federal Copyright act. The current penalty for statutory damages for non-commercial infringement ranges between $100 and $5,000. However, according to Voltage’s lawyer, James Zibarras, “It’s going to be up to the courts to decide what the appropriate penalty is.”
According to the Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic, Voltage won’t likely see any reason in going after these downloaders for more than $100 due to the substantial cost of legal fees and the belief that the court would shut them down.
Voltage Productions has been behind such movies as “The Hurt Locker,” “Dallas Buyers Club” and “Don Jon.”
