Microsoft Looks Internally to Better its Foothold

After Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer stepped down, it was assumed by many that an outsider from some competing tech giant would be brought into the fold to help increase sales, especially in the area of mobile devices.

Instead, it was announced Tuesday that 22-year veteran and cloud services chief Satya Nadella had been appointed the company’s third CEO.

Nadella helped build the Windows NT, which is still at the core of Windows today. But that was 20 years ago and since then the company has struggled somewhat in the areas of innovation and adaptation. Nadella was quick to point out in a letter to employees that, “Our industry does not respect tradition – it only respects innovation.” Yet many are regarding Nadella’s appointed role as a return to the company’s technological heritage.

Last year alone Microsoft took a US$900-million write-down of unsold and discounted units of its Surface tablet, which failed to find a consumer in a market dominated by Apple iPads.

In other news, Microsoft announced that Bill Gates would be returning to the company to assume a new role on the Board as Founder and Technological Advisor.
