Jaywalking Tickets a Waste of Tax Payer Dollars
While attending a funeral, Mayor Rob Ford was hit with a $109 fine for jaywalking while in the Vancouver area this weekend.
The mayor was caught Friday night near a Shell gas station just up the street from his hotel in Coquitlam crossing the street illegally. According to sources, Ford expressed his opinion that ticketing for jaywalking is a waste of tax payer dollars.
However, that sentiment is not shared by Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart, who posted on Facebook that the city had “asked Coquitlam RCMP to clamp down a bit on the serious and risky issue of jaywalking.”
Furthermore, Stewart has expressed that jaywalking is one of the major reasons pedestrians get hit and killed by cars in Coquitlam. Stewart went on to say, during a CBC News interview, that “We want to enforce our safe pedestrian activities across our community, no matter who you are. And in this instance it was a visiting mayor. We’ve really spent a lot of time on engineering, on education, but also on enforcement. We’re going to continue with that enforcement and all those other efforts to make it so that fewer people get injured and fewer people get killed crossing the street.”
On a side note, it’s reassuring to know that Rob Ford isn’t just a problem for Toronto, but a problem no matter which city he chooses to cross streets in.
