“A Bad Habit and a Vice, Not Very Different from Cigarettes”
With the President of the United States stepping up to the podium and declaring that marijuana is no more harmful than alcohol, the legalization of the substance may not be too far away.
Barack Obama, in a recent interview with the New Yorker’s David Remnick, not only admitted to smoking pot as a youth (an admission that has been brought up countless times before) but also attested to the fact that although it isn’t a healthy addition to your life it also shouldn’t be classified as a dangerous drug. In fact, when asked if he believes it to be less harmful than alcohol Obama admitted that it is “in terms of its impact on the individual consumer.”
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, marijuana is classified as a Schedule 1 substance, which means that it is considered alongside such drugs as heroin, ecstasy, and LSD as being, “the most dangerous class of drugs with a high potential for abuse and potentially severe psychological and/or physical dependence.”
Last August, the Obama administration had already made substantial steps away from previous administrations’ war on drugs by announcing that it would not stop Washington and Colorado from legalizing recreational marijuana use. Furthermore, during his interview Obama indicated that, “We should not be locking up kids or individual users for long stretches of jail time when some of the folks who are writing those laws have probably done the same thing.”
Of course Obama did make it very clear that he is in no way supporting people’s habits, adding that “It’s not something I encourage, and I’ve told my daughters I think it’s a bad idea, a waste of time, not very healthy.”
