COLLABORATION AT WORK: Dinner and Drinks at Blowfish
Written by Eric Irvin
There’s nothing like dinner and drinks with friends to help you get back into the swing of things after a long weekend break. Yes, it may have been raining on that May night but my friends and I couldn’t turn down an invitation from Zark Fatah, proprietor of Blowfish Restaurant, to swing by for some after-work R&R. And since the guys and I needed to catch up on business and all the games that took place on the long weekend, who were we to say no to the invite?
Fatah was determined to impress with a suggested menu for the night. After ordering some great sake, our meal kicked off with the signature Ebi sashimi, which combined tiger shrimp with tempura crisps, mango and avocado, all topped off with a bit of spicy mayo. Better still was the paper-wrapped handroll that added a nice crunch to every bite. This was quickly followed by some amazing spicy edamame, which admittedly challenged our chopstick skills but was certainly worth the slip or two.
The meal progressed with the ‘real’ sushi – spicy tuna on crispy sushi rice. Lightly fried batter went well with freshly diced and seasoned tuna on top. Next up was the Cajun tuna sashimi, which in a word, was awesome. Seasoned to perfection and thinly sliced, the juxtaposition of Cajun spices with the coolness of sashimi tasted fresh and had some pop to it as well. Last but not least in our sushi experience was the truffle albacore roll, and we all agreed that never in our lives had we tasted something like this. The words ‘rich’ and ‘sushi’ are rarely used together but that’s exactly what this dish embodied. The combination of spicy albacore tuna paste with tiger shrimp and topped with a garlic chip and truffle oil was a delicacy not to be missed.
By then, we were already well fed though none of us passed up the chance to try the roasted miso-marinated black cod. Cooked to perfection, the fish simply melted in our mouths and was the perfect way to end the meal.
The rain had finally subsided by the time we left the restaurant, bellies full and with little business discussed. While walking home, we reflected on a great dinner and how despite being around for a number of years, Blowfish continues to push culinary boundaries and tempt the taste buds. And if visiting with good friends, there really is nothing better.
