TTC Hoping to Tap in to the Infrastructure Fund
The federal government announced Thursday their plans for the New Building Canada fund which will include $4-billion for projects deemed to be of national importance and $10-billion for projects if regional importance.
This proposed funding has both TTC CEO Andy Byford and Mayor Rob Ford hoping to receive these funds in order to assist in their own pet infrastructures.
According to Mr. Byford, Harper “accepted what I was saying. We had a long discussion about the line and he gets the point around funding. I intend to get some of that money for Toronto.”
Though Byford has indicated that his relief line takes priority over any other project, the province’s transit agency, Metrolinx, has insisted that it is only one of many projects on a long list of proposed projects.
Currently, the TTC has been working to clean up their act. Lately, after complaints of unclean trains and dirty bathrooms, Byford had vowed to make the subway cleaner with his new TTC customer charter.
Among other things the new charter will also allow customers to make debit and credit card payments at all stations, and will seek to place more Supervisors on the front line to make sure that all busses are punctual.
All in all, should nothing fall through, we should be seeing a cleaner, friendlier and overall better TTC experience in the next year.
