Healthy Eating in the Air

We all know it can be difficult to eat healthy while travelling. For many people, half the fun of travel is the quick snack at a gas station or the cup of Tim Horton’s or the pre-packed sandwiches at an airport. But just days away from Christmas, the busiest travel time of year, it’s more important than ever to not indulge and keep off the pounds.

Charles Platkin, the author of ‘Diet Detective’ as well as a personal trainer, recently ranked 12 major airlines based on their healthy eating options, including in-flight meals and pre-departure snacks.

Air Canada and Virgin America tied for the number one spot, scoring four-and-a-half stars. While Virgin America won points for its healthier individual snack options, which include a ‘Travel Light’ and a ‘Flight Bites’ menu of salads and dessert, Air Canada scored high for its lower calorie count for most snack options, including carrots and celery.

Allegiant Air, a U.S. budget carrier, was on the other end of the scale with one-and-a-half stars. According to Platkin, the airline doesn’t offer nutritional information on its meals and snacks and serves what’s popular (and often times least healthy).

Overall, airline eats are on the up and up. With most companies having reduced the number of calories per food item from 388 in 2012 to 360, no single airline’s menu is completely unhealthy. So don’t fret when a stewardess hands you the in-flight meal. It’s the holiday feast waiting for you at home that will get you.
