The Disparity within the Netflix Market
All too often, Canadians tend to point out just how awful the Canadian version of Netflix is in comparison to its U.S. counterpart. While we have access to over 3,600 titles, Americana have over 10,000 and often receive updates to television series sooner. Despite this unfair advantage, Netflix has continued to experience a steady and increasing revenue since its launch in 2010.
But why the disparity? According to the company it’s all about the licencing. Each television show and movie is licenced by its owners in different regions in a plethora of ways.
Though this method has worked in the past in terms of generating revenue, it is a business model that’s quickly becoming outdated due to the ease of use provided by the Internet. The fact is that a large number of shows and movies that appear in the American version aren’t available in Canada because someone else has already swooped them up.
It’s hard to say whether this method will change as the Internet becomes a more prevalent method of streaming television content. But a large demographic has already moved away from subscription-based TV in favour of streaming services, whether paid for or free. It’s also true that most Canadian Netflix users have bypassed this little mishap and have opted to acquire American Netflix through ISP changing means. And if you have yet to try it, we here at the Bull recommend that you do so as well. It’ll change your life.
