Door to Door a Thing of the Past
Big changes will be occurring within the next five years at Canada Post, which has recently announced they’ve “begun to post significant financial losses.”
With fierce competition from other couriers as well as new technology leading consumers to communicate and pay bills online, the federal Crown Corporation has plans in place to slowly get rid of home delivery of mail. In its place would be community mailboxes, which have already begun popping up in various new suburbs across Canada.
In the five-year span Canada Post is expected to remove anywhere from 6,000 to 8,000 positions. A number of these cutbacks are expected to happen through natural means such as retiring and employees leaving the company.
Canada Post has asked Ottawa for financial relief next year in order to help support the restructuring of its business.
In an announcement on Wednesday Canada Post stated: “The company will continue to bring the cost of labour in line with its competitors through attrition and collective bargaining over time.”
Though Canada Post reported an increase in its third quarter with a pre-tax loss of $109 million, it still falls short of the $145 million just a year ago.
