6. Michael Katchen, CEO Wealthsimple
Navigating the investment world can be scary to the untrained. Wealthsimple, an online investment management company, is trying to make it less so.
Launched in the fall of 2015 in Toronto, the company was conceived roughly three years ago when Michael Katchen had the idea to develop an Excel spreadsheet with tips to help his colleagues and friends set up “thoughtful” investment portfolios.
That idea, taken a step further, became the basis for Wealthsimple: using technology to provide sound financial advice to investors at a low cost.
But Wealthsimple isn’t just a clever platform. It’s part of Katchen’s larger initiative to grow Canada’s tech sector. In an op-ed he wrote last November, Katchen stated, “Problems with investment management and many other industries persist in Canada. Too few Canadian companies are willing to tackle these issues head on. I moved back to Canada to help put Canada’s tech community on the global map.”
