One weekend in Boston
What a difference a weekend makes.
Heading into Boston for a 3 game series with the Red Sox last Friday, the Jays were on a win streak but their ability to turn around their season was still in doubt. With the Yankees surging and the Tampa Bay playing some good ball in their own right, baseball fans in Toronto would’ve been forgiven for not expecting much in Beantown.
But oh would they have been wrong. Not only did the Jays sweep the Sox but they did so in such dramatic fashion that as of Monday, most sports commentators who like to rank things moved the birds up to a top-5 slot in their Power Rankings.
So how did it happen? Well on Friday after getting behind 8-1 in the first three frames, the Jays put in an epic 7th inning that saw all 9 batters get a hit and score in the inning. On Saturday, it was a bit of the opposite in effect as the Sox were down early but managed a comeback off of knuckle-baller R.A. Dickey and a shaky bullpen to put the game into extra innings on a scorching hot day. However, all that did was set the table for a little more drama when catcher Russell Martin hit a solo shot in the 11th to seal the deal in front of a very loud contingent of Toronto fans who made it to the game that afternoon.
Sunday’s game was just a whooping too getting these Jays to 11 straight wins and tying a franchise record in the process. Of course the good times can only roll so much as the Jays lost in extra innings yesterday to the Mets but again it was their bullpen who coughed up the W.
Here’s hoping Jays management has seen enough at this point in June to know they have to be buyers heading into the summer and major upgrades in the pen, and possibly to the starting rotation will be needed in order to make a real run at and into the post season.
