A Case For Lowry

Much like it is the duty of citizens to vote in a political election, it is our duty as basketball fans to vote for our NBA All-Star representatives. All-Star voting started on Friday, December 12th. Fans will be able to cast their votes daily between now and January 19th on the NBA Ballot at NBA.com or by tweeting the players’ names and #NBABallot. Each conference’s starting five will consist of two guards and three forward/centers as chosen by the fans. Each conference’s seven reserve (bench) players are then selected by coach voting.
Raptors fans, it is time to consolidate our efforts and vote on mass to send Kyle Lowry to the All-Star game as a member of the East’s starting five. In their 19 seasons, the Raptors have sent only 4 players to the All-Star game: Vince Carter (2000-2004), Antonio Davis (2001), Chris Bosh (2006-2010), and current injured shooting guard, DeMar DeRozan (2014). Only two of which, Carter and Bosh, have been voted into the starting line up.
Even before the DeRozan injury, Lowry was Toronto’s best shot at receiving a starting spot. With an average of 19.6 points and 7.6 assists per game, Toronto’s 6-foot point guard joins the Wizards’ John Wall as the only two Eastern Conference players to rank among the top ten guards in both categories. All-Star voting; however, has always been about so much more than the numbers. Lowry is up against players with compelling storylines such as Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving, and Miami’s Dwayne Wade, both of whom may be receiving votes based on popularity and past achievements over this year’s performance.
Lowry’s story too, has been incredibly compelling this season. Not only has the 28-year-old stepped up as the leader on the court, closing out many close games in the final minutes, he has also taken on the role as the Raptors off-court leader. The Raptors’ East leading record of 19-6 has largely been attributed to team chemistry. Lowry, proclaimed as the team’s emotional leader, deserves a lot of credit for said chemistry.
